The purpose of the City of Sylacauga Street Department is to provide timely, courteous, and efficient services thus enhancing the quality of life for all citizens of Sylacauga through effective and responsible use of designated funds, personnel, and equipment in the following scope of services:

  • Street Maintenance - Includes cleaning and repair of streets, curbs, alleys, parking areas, etc.
  • Trash and Recycle Pickup - Includes landfill materials, limb chipping, and leaf vacuum for mulching, metal recycle, and maintaining dumpsites.
  1. Limbs should be separated from other trash.
  2. Leaves, pinestraw, and/or grass clippings should be separated from other trash.
  3. Metal items should be separated from other trash.
  4. Household items such as old furniture, packing materials, junk items should be separated from trash.
  5. Trash items should not be placed near trees, utility poles, mailboxes, etc., so as not to interfere with usage of loading equipment.
  6. Household garbage should never be mixed with yard trash.
  7. The Street Department does not provide debris removal from pulpwood, tree surgeons, construction, or other contracted services.
Collection schedules are determined by location in the city along with the amount of trash there is citywide, weather conditions, special projects, and emergency situations. Our goal is for once-a-week pickup, but circumstances (autumn leaf season or after a storm, for example) sometimes hinder our efforts. Generally speaking, trash pickup schedules are as follows:

Ward 1-Monday pickup for residents north of East Ft. Williams Street and east of North Broadway Avenue (and Highway 21 North).

Ward 2- Tuesday pickup for residents south of East Ft. Williams Street and east of South Broadway Avenue.

Ward 3- Wednesday pickup for residents south of West Ft. Williams Street and west of South Broadway Avenue.

Ward 4- Thursday pickup for residents north of East Ft. Williams Street and west of North Broadway Avenue (and Highway 21 North).

  • Storm Drainage-Includes cleaning and maintaining culverts, inlets, ditches, etc., and installation of pipes and culverts.
  • Sign Maintenance-Includes repair/replacement and installation of traffic signs and street markers.
  • Concrete Work-Includes repair/replacement/construction of sidewalks, inlets, retaining walls, parking areas, etc.
  • City Property Maintenance-Includes grass cutting and maintenance of Lade Howard property, Marble City Cemetery, Annex, Airport Runways, etc.
  • Right-of-Ways Maintenance-Includes cutting grass and maintaining city right-of-ways, shoulder work, and cutting of alleys, drainage ditches, corners, etc.
  • Litter Control
  • Dead Animal Removal and Disposal and Mosquito Control
