How do I contact the Sylacauga Police Department?
The Sylacauga Police Department is located at 301 N. Broadway Avenue, on the basement floor of the Municipal Complex (City Hall).  Our mailing address is Post Office Box 2460,

How do I file a police report?
To file a police report, you may come to the Sylacauga Police Department, OR, call
(256) 245-4334.  Please remember that speaking with a police department employee DOES NOT mean that a report has been filed.  Ask the employee to whom you speak for the case number for your report.  Back

Can I make a police report over the phone?
Reports are not taken over the telephone.  To make a police report, you may come to the Sylacauga Police Department, OR, request an officer respond to your location.  To request an officer to respond to a non-emergency at your location, call (256) 245-4334.  For emergencies, dial 911.  Back

What do I need to do after a vehicle accident?
You will need a copy of the Accident Report in order to file an insurance claim.  If a Sylacauga Police Officer filed the report, a copy may be obtained from the Records Division.

Call your insurance company as soon as possible after the accident.  Your insurance company may pick up a copy of the report and complete any necessary documentation.  The law requires that you file an SR-13 form with the State of Alabama within 30 days of the accident, except in the case of a private property accident.  SR-13 forms are also available at the Records Division.  If you do not file an SR-13 form within 30 days, your driver's license will be suspended until the form is filed.  Back

How do I get a copy of a police Accident or Incident/Offense report?
After one (1) business day, you can obtain a copy of your report by coming to the Records Division of the Sylacauga Police Department, Monday thru Friday, from 8 am to 5 pm.  Arrest reports are not public record and cannot be obtained without a subpoena from the relevant court.  Reverse sides of Incident/Offense reports may be obtained only through subpoena.

Copies of police reports are available at a cost of $5.00.  Prices for other media such as videos, photographs, etc., are available from the Records Division upon request.  Back

How do I obtain a warrant?
After you have filed a police report, you may contact an investigator at the Sylacauga Police Department at (256) 401-2464.  If sufficient evidence exists, the investigator will refer you to the appropriate court magistrate.  Filing a police report does not mean a warrant has been issued.  Back

What do I do if I have an outstanding warrant against me?
You must turn yourself in to the Sylacauga Police Department.  You will be able to post bond (except in the case of Violation of Probation cases) as soon as the department concludes the warrant service process.  You may also post bond in cash or through a professional bonding company.  Back

I received a traffic ticket; what do I do next?
Most traffic tickets can be paid without a court appearance; however, these tickets must be paid before the court date that appears at the bottom of the ticket.  Tickets may be paid at the Municipal Court Office located on the first floor of the Sylacauga Municipal Complex.  Municipal Court office hours are Monday thru Friday, from 8 am to 5 pm.  Please bring the ticket/citation with you.

You may appear in person or pay by mail, but must pay by cash, certified check or money order and include the traffic ticket/citation with the payment.  Please sign the ticket/citation before mailing it with your payment.

If you are unsure as to whether or not a court appearance is required, or any additional information about tickets, please contact the court magistrate at he Municipal Court Office at (256) 401-2521.  Back

What can I do about animal complaints?
The City of Sylacauga has a "Restraint Law" that pertains to dogs only.  If you live in the city limits and are bothered by barking dogs or dogs roaming in your neighborhood, call the Police Department at (256) 401-2442.  A police employee will take your complaint and assign it to the Nuisance Control Officer.  Dogs not under restraint may be picked up and taken to the Animal Rescue Foundation.  In most cases, however, the owner of the dog is given a warning.  After the first warning, the owner may be fined if the person reporting the violation is willing to sign a complaint.

When a dog is picked up, every effort is made to contact the owner.  If your dog is missing, please call the Animal Rescue Foundation at (256) 245-2500.  Back

How do I discreetly report a crime or suspicious activity?
If you see or hear of activity that is criminal or suspicious, there are several ways you can report this activity without fear of being identified.  All information will be judged on it's own merit.  The police department will not take action on unsupported information.  That does not mean the activity will not be reviewed.

You may call the 24/7 Anonymous Tip Line at (256) 249-4716 or the Investigations Division at (256) 401-2464;  or, you may email your information to police@sylacauga-al.com .  Your identity will be kept confidential, and your information will be fully evaluated.  Back

Whom do I contact about traffic problems or enforcement requests?
You can contact the police department, 24 hours a day, seven days a week at (256) 245-4334, to request extra patrol when the problem is occurring.  You can also have the patrol supervisor on duty contact you by calling the Communications Office at (256) 401-2525 and leaving a message.  Back

We are going on vacation.  Whom should we notify?
If possible, notify the police department at least one week prior to leaving to request extra patrol.  This information is forwarded to our Patrol Division so that additional patrol of the area can be arranged.  Back

How can obtain information on sex offenders in my neighborhood?
A sex offender registry is maintained at the Sylacauga Police Department, Investigations Division.  You may review information on local sex offenders in person Monday through Friday, from 8 am to 5 pm.

Whom do I contact for hiring off-duty police officers?
You can contact the Patrol Captain at (256) 401-2446, Monday thru Friday from 8 am to 5 pm.

Please read the following requirements:

  • The event location must be within the city limits of Sylacauga.

  • If applicable, you must provide a copy of all appropriate City of Sylacauga business licenses and insurance.

  • You must make the request at least 30 days prior to the event.

  • Each officer is paid $20.00 per hour with 2 hour minimum.

  • Your request must be approved by the Chief of Police.  Back

When should I call 911?
911 is for emergencies.  These types of calls would include life-threatening situations where someone's life is in danger or a crime is occurring and police assistance is needed immediately.  The non-emergency number is (256) 245-4334.  Back
