What is the Citizens Police Academy?
As part of our on-going commitment to the Sylacauga community we will use the Citizens Police Academy (CPA) to inform and educate the public on the duties and responsibilities of police officers.  These initiatives are designed as part of our community policing philosophy, police and citizens working together to solve problems in the community.  It's that simple!  Getting involved is the only way to improve our quality of life.

How to become involved in the CPA
The Citizens Police Academy is a one week long class that will teach you basic police officer skills and make you more aware of the problems faced by officers and the community on a daily basis.  The CPA will not make you a police officer and one week is not enough time to teach you everything there is to know.  We will however, give you a basic understanding on several different law enforcement topics.

The CPA is open to residents, business owners and local business employees of the Sylacauga City Limits.  Applicants must complete an application, which you may obtain from the Crime Prevention Office Monday thru Friday between the hours of 8:00AM - 5:00PM.  Completed applications are turned into the Crime Prevention Office and a records check may be done before your application is approved.  Once you have been approved, a member of the department will notify you of your academy date.  CPA sessions are from 5:30PM - 8:30PM.  On the last night of the session there will be a graduation and you will be enrolled in the CPA Alumni Association.

What you will learn during the CPA
The CPA has been designed to touch on a number of law enforcement related duties.  Along with regular scheduled class time, you will also have practical exercises and a chance to take part in the Sylacauga Police Department's Ride Along Program.  Some of the topics covered in the CPA are:

  • Criminal Law and Judicial Procedure

  • Community Policing

  • Corrections and Communications

  • Patrol Techniques

  • Narcotics Enforcement

  • Criminal Investigations

  • Officer Survival

  • Police Weapons and Tactics

  • Police K-9

  • Practical Exercises

  • Roundtable Discussion

Are you up to a challenge?  We hope so and we welcome you to apply for the Citizens Police Academy.
