I cannot remember when I did not love to read. As a child, my mother read to us and took us to children's reading programs at our small local library. Books were always part of our birthday and Christmas presents. Many times my parents caught me awake reading hours beyond my bedtime on school nights. I still feel "the need" to read every night to settle in for sleep. One of the greatest things my mother taught me was the joy of reading. She often said, "how could you ever be lonesome with a good book nearby!" I hope I have instilled a little bit of this in my children and grandchildren.

I love to read most any type of book with the exception of science fiction. My favorite type is probably a historical saga - particularly about the South. Southern fiction and Southern authors are real favorites to me.

About three years ago, I was getting into a habit of reading nothing but suspense and mysteries. So I decided to change my habit. I now try to rotate my books by reading fiction (anything that someone has recommended or I've read a good review about), a suspense, a non-fiction (usually biographies and autobiographies but not always), and a Christian based or inspirational book. However, I think that you must be in the right frame of mind for the type of book you are reading or you will not enjoy it; so sometimes I veer from my plan.

Some of my favorites:

Fiction:
I read most of Oprah's Book Club selections because they make you think, and these books always include a social or moral issue that makes you search your own feelings. Oprah's choices are often first time authors and some are excellent. I always enjoy Barbara Taylor Bradford, Anne Rivers Siddons, Nicholas Sparks, Nora Roberts to name a few.

Suspense:

Nelson DeMille is a great favorite. David Baldacci, Tami Hoag, Jeffrey Archer, Greg Iles, John Grisham, Perry O'Shaughnessy, and Steve Martini are all good and exciting writers.

Non-Fiction:

The Color of Water by James McBride - superb!
Angela's Ashes by Frank McCourt - heartbreaking but so very good;
Personal History - Kathryn Graham's biography, long but well worth reading;

All Over But the Shoutin
' by Rick Bragg - Alabamian who never forgot his roots!
Currently reading John Adams by David McCullough - great insight into our forefathers.

Christian or Inspirational:

Red Tent by Anita Diamant;
Just Give Me Jesus by Anne Graham;
Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren;
Mark of the Lion Series by Francine Rivers
Max Lucado's books
Dr. Phil McGraw's books

We are so fortunate to have such a wonderful library in Sylacauga, and the new building addition will add another plus to an already outstanding program. Please support our library by utilizing their facilities and attending the B. B. Comer Library sponsored programs. All small towns are not so fortunate!!
